Acid-fast bacillus (AFB) is a type of bacteria that causes tuberculosis and other types of mycobacterial infections, such as leprosy (Hansen's disease).

AFB tests are most often used to diagnose an active tuberculosis (TB) infection, especially after a positive result in a TB screening test. A TB screening test can't tell the difference between an inactive and active TB infection. So, if the screening test comes back positive, your provider may want to verify the results by using an AFB test.
